There are some questions we get pretty regularly. The anwsers to most can be found in our Student Handbook, but here are a few of the most common answered for your convenience.
What is the evaluation process?
This is a long and complicated process. Our faculty is asked to complete an evaluation of each of their students. The School Director collects every evaluation, reads it and compiles all of the evaluations. The focus of this process is to determine an area of growth and an area of focus for each individual in the school. The information is recorded on the student’s placement card.A great amount of time, thought and effort are put into student placement. It is important that students be placed together with other students that have similar strengths and similar needs. This allows for cohesiveness in the classroom. Disappointment is natural when friends are separated during this process and parents can help by encouraging their child through that disappointment. Level is just a number. Remember, we could call a group "Level 358," but it will not change the fact that we will teach them what is next for them as a group.
When can I start pointe?
There are so many different answers to this question based on opinion or the commonly heard “Jane Doe started when she was X.” Working on pointe too soon can cause permanent damage to the body’s development. Therefore, it is not a decision we make lightly. At HBS, decision of when to put a student on pointe is made by the School Director along with the student’s current instructors. We look at prospective students around the ages of 11 going on 12. Factors we judge include alignment, muscular strength, bone maturation, and sufficient range of motion in the foot and ankle. An excellent article on the subject is "When Can I Start Pointe Work?" by the International Association for Dance Medicine and Science.
What performance opportunities are available for my student?
All HBS students are represented in our Annual School Performance. HBS students have an exclusive opportunity to audition for the Huntsville Ballet Company’s production of The Nutcracker. This is an opportunity to perform on a professional stage with a live symphony orchestra. Auditions for other Company productions are open to HBS students as needed by the Artistic Director and are dependent upon casting and skill level required for performances.
What is the school’s student dress code?
Dress code information can be found on pages 6 and 7 in the Student Handbook.
What are ballet technique minimums?
And why do we have them? Class minimums can be found on page 5 of the Student Handbook. Minimums are set to ensure the proper progression of technique associated with a professional ballet school. Certain minimums are necessary to maintain the technique needed for pointe work, foot work and larger, more complicated movement.
Should my dancer go off to a summer program?
Summer Program attendance is a decision based on the individual student. Goals, development and readiness are all factors used to determine if and where the child should go. It is not necessary to go away and in some cases, it can hinder the progress of a student if he/she attends a program with a different technique base.
Where can I find the school calendar?
Important dates can be found on the back page of the Student Handbook.
What is the cost of tuition?
Tuition is based on two 18 week semesters for our registered students. We offer the flexibility of installments as a convenience to our families. The rate per class decreases each time a class is added to a student’s schedule (until the discount cap is met). Annual and Semester payments offer further discount.
Can my child do a make-up class?
Any HBS student is welcome to take a make-up class at her class level or a level below. A level below is a place where your student can strengthen fundamentals and gain confidence. However, it is important and we encourage all students to attend the class for which they are registered to maintain the progression of student within the class.
